An ad hoc network is the kind of wireless connection enabling to connect directly to another PC, in its place of going through the net. While Internet-enabled connections are handy for most of the work, the capacity to interface directly with other wireless-enabled PC can make file transmission and local networking faster and easier.

Ad hoc wireless connections are supported by Microsoft Windows and are easy to set up.
