Computer networking whether a cabled or wireless, most users only want their home network to work. However, there's no need to be a master to understand computer networks, and can find help fixing any problems.

Ethernet History

1. The first ethernet was created in 1973 by Bob Metcalf. The amount of data that can be transfered was 3 Mbps. After several years, the DIX cartel, made the 10 Mbps ethernet. In the year 1983, IEEE made the 802.3 Standard, based off of the DIX ethernet.

Ethernet Controller

An ethernet controller is a chip controlling all the data exchanged among 2 PCs, through net. Available in various pin configurations. Like many PC hardware, it needs software drivers to operate. Every controller has its own features.

Computer Networking Basics

2. Novell developed the first PC LAN. Enabling 2 or more PCs to be connected and share data. LAN developed in WAN.

Communication Protocols

3. For PCs to interact with each other, same rules must be used for transferring data. These rules are called communication protocol. The most famous protocols are for the net, called TCP/IP, which is a suite of protocols. Without this installed, PCs cannot connect to the net. All protocol data is routed from the ethernet controller.

Network Interface Card

4. It's likely to buy an individual unit named a network interface card. This is a circuit board having the ethernet controller and is inserted in a PCI socket on motherboard. It supplies a dedicated, constant network connection. However, many motherboards has an RJ-45 port installed. This adds more processing to the CPU but the amount is very small for house use.
