A 56K modem is used to connect a PC to Internet through a dial-up Internet connection. It is very slow. If unable to afford the monthly charge of broadband service or having a PC that doesn't support the service, there are various option you can try to get the best possible speeds.

• Step 1

Remove any devices using the same telephone line as modem while PC is connected to the Internet to have the best possible speeds.

• Step 2

Insert modem into a wall phone jack using the minimum wires. Avoid using machines like routers to connect the 56K modem to a landline. Connect PC to a telephone jack using minimum cable as possible.

• Step 3

Close all unrequited application while using Internet. The speed of PC processes data from the Internet is directly related to the available system.

If splitting PCs Internet connection between things such as IM, checking email and loading web pages at the same time, all these functions is only going to get 33% of the Internet connection speed. Resulting, loading much slower than if PC can concentrate on these things once. Check email, and then load a web page, then IM individually to have the best possible speeds.
