Making PC network needs minimum 2 PCs interact with each other. Generally this is done by connecting every PC system with each other using a cable or wireless networking system. There might be good causes why a PC network should not be establish as a wireless system, like bad signal reception or too much electromagnetic interference. In this situation, a cables solution might be the only choice. But is it possible to plug network cable from PC in a phone jack to make a cable network?
Ethernet Wiring vs. Telephone System Wiring
• A Cat-5 Ethernet cable seems same as a large phone wire. However, the way in which a phone jack is cabled may not fulfill with the standards of a Cat-5 Ethernet network.
A Cat-5 Ethernet cable uses warped cable pairs as signal cakes. These cable pairs must end at particular pins at all sides of the Cat-5 cable. As some phone systems like phone systems following the USOC standard, are cabled in a different way than the Cat-5 standard, inserting an Ethernet cable in such a telephone jack will not enable the sending of data.
Normal house phone systems in the US use a parallel, 4-wire phone wire. A Cat-5 has 4 twisted cable pairs. Therefore, a Cat-5 cable would be electrically mismatched with a normal house phone system.

Apart from, the connector jack for a normal house phone system uses an RJ-12 plug receptor, which is about half the width of the RJ-45 plug that a Cat-5 cable. For this purpose, a Cat-5 wire would be physically mismatched with a house phone network too.
