Marketing Time Capsule, coupled with Time Machine has greatly simplified the lives of Mac users. It is a simple and elegant solution to safeguard its data and manage its local network.

In itself, Time Capsule is anything but revolutionary. The case of Apple closes a Wi-Fi router and a hard disk. But as often is the combination of technologies that Apple makes the package attractive. However, it is not necessarily suitable for everyone, not least because for many users, the router portion of the Time Capsule is overlap with the box provided by the ISP.

Lately, there are more and more hard drives that are compatible with Time Machine and bursting with multimedia features. We thus tested the LaCie d2 Network.

Designed by Neil Poulton The 2big Network is very much in line with Apple's aesthetic choices of the moment. The model we tested contains a 500 GB hard drive.

LaCie Network Assistant is a small utility which houses an icon in the menu bar. From this, it is possible to wake up the disk mount one of its partitions or configure the network portion.

But the configuration itself of the solution from LaCie is a web browser. From this, you have access to all functions. You can create as many mount points as you want. A mount point is a virtual disk that is part of the disk drive.

For a given split point, it is possible to choose the protocols you want to use indicate whether you want to use it or not with Time Machine and if you want or not to create public access.
