Keeping Windows from Disk Checking on Startup

Check Disk is useful utility that is accessible in many versions of Windows. Check Disk, also known as CHKDSK, will scan hard disk, check for errors or bad sectors, and repair them if possible. You can enable it, or schedule it to run automatically later yourself. If you are using XP, though, and Windows executes disk checking every time you start PC, you can stop this feature using steps given below.

Instructions

Using Scheduled Tasks

Step 1

Go to "Start" and choose "Programs", "Accessories" and then "System Tools." Click "Scheduled Tasks" to open Scheduled Tasks window.

Step 2


Search for "Autochk" or "Chkdsk" in list of now programmed tasks. Click to top quality file in task list.

Step 3

Right-click task and choose "Delete."

Step 4

Close "Task Scheduler" and reboot PC. If Disk Checking starts again on startup, of if you unable to locate "Autochk" or "Chkdsk" in list of scheduled tasks, go to next section.

Editing the Registry

Step 1

Click "Start" and click "Run."

Step 2

Type regedit in "Open" box and click "OK." Windows Registry Editor will open.

Step 3

Expand "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" folder by clicking arrow to its left. Expand "System" folder, then "CurrentControlSet" folder, then "Control" folder and lastly "Session Manager" folder.

Step 4


Right click "BootExecute". Choose "Modify." Type autocheck autochk * into "Value Data" box and click "OK."

Step 5

Close Registry Editor and reboot PC. If Disk Checking starts again on startup, hard disk may be scratched. Contact PC Company or PC repairs facility.
