Changing location of Windows XP Temporary Installation Files

When you install programs, hot fixes and updates from Microsoft, temporary files are vital part of installation procedure. These temporary files help system recover if installation process is interrupted by power failure or system crash, and they can help you undo modifications in event they cause any problems or system insecurity. But although those temporary files are needed, it is essential to ensure they are saved to correct place. Just accepting default could mean running out of space on main hard drive, so it is vital to tell Windows where to save those temp files.

Instructions

Step 1

Put in CD having files you want to install. If files do not exist on CD, download them .

Step 2

Go to "Start" and select "Run". Type "driveletter\setup.exe /tempdrive: location" and click "OK." E.g. if you were installing program from CD drive with drive letter of D and wanted to save temporary files to H drive, type "d:\setup.exe /tempdrive:h".

Step 3

Go to mark where you specified temporary files be saved and ensure files are being written to that place.
