Step 1

Find window lock. On single and double hung windows, locks are placed at junction of two sashes, middle between top and bottom of window. On casement windows, lock can generally be found along edge of window, middle between top and bottom.

Step 2

Verify to see if lock is occupied. You can do this by softly trying to open window, or by looking at lock to see if it is in lock position.

Step 3

Turn the lock handle to unlock window. On double defer windows, means sliding lock lever from one side to other. On pane windows, means moving lock handle up or down. If window has above one lock, be certain to unlock all before opening window.
