    1) Initialize means erasing complete contents of hard drive. Or after initialized, hard drive is blank. Both say it is suggested to backup files before detachable media. You can do that on CD, DVD or USB stick. Thus you can reinstall afterward after hard disk deleted, it is impossible to go back. Be watchful then before setting complete hard disk or partition of it.

    2) Initialize and formatting is similar thing. Here you get option to select between kinds of format you need. I recommend you format Mac OS Extended or Mac OS Extended Journaled. SNOW LEOPARD also formatting Sensitive. This choice permits including spotlight to differentiate among uppercase and lowercase letters, and so system doesn’t treat also data or commands as they are entered in uppercase or lowercase.

    3) I suggest you to make and utilize many partitions here. As if single partition crashes or infected with virus then move data to different drive. You get possibility to save date. If it is preferable to install clone from partition on other drive than where main OS X partition.

    4) It is not needed or required that you must partition drive. You can maintain single as required. But only problem lies that if drive crashes then you lose all you have. In this regular backup on external drive or disc saves time. Also install programs and schedule backups for same. There are many advantages.
