Windows Server 2008 users are able to partition hard disk by integral disk management of OS; this can be resized by third party partition utilities. This OS allows increasing volume, shrinking volume, making partition, removing partition, format partition and changing drive letter.
Also Extend Partition Server Edition utilized to enlarge server partition. It is intended for administrators and higher users to direct server and non-server disk partition to utilize server. By this you can extend partition.
To shrink partition, go to disk management and right click volume to be resized and choose Shrink Volume to request for Shrink dialog. Then enter amount by which volume is to shrink, and click Shrink button to start resize, this procedure takes time and no necessary for restart.
Windows Server 2008 built in disk management can extend partition, but there must be some unallocated space behind this partition. For example, there are two partitions, C and D. Use "Shrink Volume" function of disk management to shrink partition D, there is unallocated space behind partition D, not partition C. When you choose partition C, click "Extend Volume" to add unallocated space to partition C, the "Extend Volume" option is greyed out. While disk management has no "Move" function to move unallocated space to be clinging to partition C. So third party partition manager is required, I came across partition master, its "Resize/Move" function can let unallocated space clinging to partition C and extend it without reboot computer.
