Yes you can use PS3 as PC for not only playing games but also for surfing internet, running applicable PC application and to build it as server PC in network environment. PS3 has own feature which ease to install third-party OS on console. Ubuntu Linux is good option.
For installation of PSUbuntu, current PS3 drive is utilized. So partition PS3 hard drive for installation or else you can't install Ubuntu OS.
To format PS3 drive, follow the steps given below:
• Start PS3 machine and login.
• Choose "Settings" and select "System Settings".
• Find "Format Utility".
• Then push X button on it and go to "Format Hard Disk".
• You prompt to format hard disk, push "Yes" and select partition setting for hard drive.
• Select "Custom" option and then select "assign 10GB to Other OS" and keep on with Quick format.
• Restart PS3 machine.
