Default Unable to play VCDs on my laptop

I am facing a peculiar issue playing VCDs on my laptop. When I load the VCDs, they show up as OAT files and I change the extension to AVI to play the videos in the VLC player. This is annoying as the video quality after changing the extension is poor. The 0s is Windows XP professional, Version 2002, SP3. How do i fix his problem?

    1. First change the extension of the file to AVI. It won't degrade the video quality.

    2. Try using Media Player Classic to play DAT files.

    3. VLC also plays DAT files. I guess you have some codec problem. try installing it again.
