Previously, most PCs come with floppy "boot disk," as assurance from tragedy that leaves OS unable to work. As floppy drives have vanished, many PCs now come with bootable CDs or DVDs, which have similar work. Though, with appearance of netbooks and ultraportable laptops, bootable CDs are no more helpful to many users than floppy disks. Luckily, moving bootable CD's files over to USB flash drive which can make bootable is not difficult.

Instructions

Windows

Step 1

Put in bootable CD or DVD in PC optical drive and USB flash drive in free USB port.

Step 2

Start command prompt. Type "diskpart" then hit "Enter." Type "list disk" then hit "Enter." List of all drives appeared which are there on PC. Find flash drive in list, by its storage facility as hint. Note figure adjacent to flash drive's entry on list.

Step 3

Type "select disk #," with flash drive number from Step 2 replacing "#". Type "clean" then hit "Enter." Type commands given below, one at a time, pushing "Enter" every time: "create partition primary," "select partition 1," "active," "format fs=fat32," "assign" then "exit."

Step 4


Type "xcopy d:*.* /s/e/f g:" at Command Prompt, replacing letter of optical drive for "d" and letter of flash drive for "g". Push "Enter" then let files copy to USB drive.

Macintosh

Step 1

Put in bootable CD or DVD and connect USB flash drive. snap "Utility", then "CD value."

Step 2

Click flash drive's symbol, then tick "Partition." Click "Volume Select" menu and select "1 Volume."

Step 3

Click "Options." If you are using Intel-based Mac, you must select "GUID Partition Table."

Step 4

On "Disk Utility" main screen tick "Erase." Select choice from "Volume Format" in reference to edition of Mac OS, then tick lower "Erase" button.

Step 5

Click "Restore." Drag symbol signifying CD or DVD to "Source" box, then drag icon signifying flash drive to "Destination" box, then click "Restore." When procedure has completed, flash drive is bootable.
