Step 1
Start by troubleshooting the clear. Problems that emerge to be CD drive problems are frequently really problems with CDs. Ensure that you have inserted CD, not DVD, into drive, and that it is not scratched. You can attempt inserting different CD into drive to help decide if problem is with CD or drive. If second CD plays without problems, the problem is probably with first CD and not with CD drive.
Step 2
Check the cables. Cables attaching CD drive to PC can work loose with frequent use of PC. Ensure that cables are firmly attached and try drive again.
Step 3
Play CD from CD drive icon on PC. Many CDs plays automatically when inserted in PC, but rarely they won't begin automatically. CD drive icon plays CD if it's problem with auto play feature on CD.
Step 4
Ensure that driver is working appropriately. If driver is damaged or deleted, CD drive won't be able to correspond with Windows. To test driver status, right click start and choose "Explorer." See if CD drive has exclamation mark beside it in list. If it does have exclamation mark, you require reinstalling driver. The procedure for doing this differs based on version of Windows. If you are insensitive with reinstalling drivers, you must take PC to professional repair shop.
Step 5
Give drive to specialized repair shop or install new drive if problems with drive opening and closing properly.
