When any part of PC goes wrong, if you know how to troubleshoot then save time and money to identify the problems. CD-ROMs are simple items to repair, as they are partly external and can be taken out from PC for check and alternate.
Instructions
• Start checking drive with media. Try PC software, audio CD and games on CDs to see if drive declines any disk.
• Clean drive with tin of compressed air and CD-ROM cleaner disk. These disks have little brushes on bottom of CD that wash lens as they spin.
• See drive in PC. Check every cord is attached to both drive and motherboard.
• Test jumper settings on back of drive. Most CD drives come in slave position. If it is not in slave spot on cable, drive may act weirdly or not at all.
• Install hardware checking program, like Sandra Lite. These programs perform different read tests on drive to ensure PC is reading information on disk properly. Many of these tests need expert disk that user can burn.
