I think it could be something wrong with the data on your USB cable is used to connect your phone to your computer. I think we should first try to connect your phone to your computer using different USB cable and after to check if the computer detects the phone or not. I hope this information will be useful for you.

I guess you should try to connect your mobile phone later you invalid your firewall on your machine. Sometimes, if we connect a USB twist into your pc our firewall may be blocking the connection to few protection cause and since we get this type of trouble with our machine. I guess you should first invalid the firewall, and after testing to connect your phone to your machine. I guess after doing this trick, you can connect your mobile and you will be able to utilize HTC Sync on your computer.

I went through your question and I think you should first try to connect your mobile to the laptop or different, and after that check if you are facing the same problem with this computer or laptop. If you get the same problem with this computer or laptop so I think there might be something wrong with your phone or USB cable, and if you are able to connect to your HTC EVO with this computer or laptop so I think you should check your settings first computer.

If you are tackling the similar trouble after trying the over answer, then I guess you should first try to connect your mobile phone with mass storage mode and then see if they are capable to utilize the mobile phone as a repel or if you is able to connect the phone to the machine as a unit, then it means that your machine USB wood is OK and the phone is nice, but you require to reinstall the HTC Sync on your machine. Hopefully, after not tackle this trouble.
