    Default Overclocking my PC

My PC has the following configuration: Intel Pentium IV 2 GHz, i845GL-8712F motherboard and 512 MB RAM. I want to ask you a couple of questions. As you know I have a very slow processor (it heats up at 32 degrees Celsius) but I want to overdock it. I overclocked it up to 2.64 GHz using the BIOS (under normal conditions, it hits 38 degrees Celsius) and up to 3 GHz (this time it hit 42 degree Celsius) using the software 'WarpSpeeder' provided on the driver CD. But after overclocking, a lot of my hardware stopped working (e.g. CD/ DVD Drive and so on).

I was able to fix all the problems except for my built-in sound card. There was no sound at all. I also tried to reinstall the audio driver but Windows was not able to detect it. Then I set the processor to run at stock speed and everything was fine including the sound card. Please tell me how to solve the problem and overclock my processor. Also tell me how much I can overclock my processor by? If my processor can be successfully overclocked, what is the normal temperature for it? Is it getting overheated? Then tell me the how much can I safely overclock my processor to?

Also, after overclocking my processor, when I shut down my PC and remove the power plug, the processor then runs on the next startup at stock speed. How can I permanently overclock it? How I can increase the multipliers?

Also, which is the best anti-spyware available to date? Which of these is better, TuneUp Utilities 2009 or Ashampoo WinOptimizer 6? Please reply soon.

It's very strange that your sound card and optical drive stopped working because you overclocked your CPU. But these symptoms indicate that your PC is becoming unstable due to excessive overclocking. Older Pentium 4 processors can't be overclocked much and hence we recommend that you don't overclock it, and just run it at stock speed. A safe limit for overclocking your processor without damaging it is up to 2.4 GHz to 2.5 GHz. Change the FSB speed in the BIOS from 100 to 125 to overclock your processor to 2.5 GHz. The temperature shouldn't go beyond 65 to 70 degrees C. If your processor reverts back to the normal speed, it's because you pushed it too far. The multiplier
of your processor is fixed and won't increase beyond x20.

We have used TuneUp utilities 2009 and Ashampoo WinOptimizer and they are both equally good.
