Those printers that have a locked-in character set, such as daisy wheel and line printers, are limited to a specific set of characters, which are usually only alphabetic characters, numbers, and some special characters. They are unable to produce graphics. Special printers, called plotters, use a combination of inkjet technology and the X and Y coordinates of the drawing elements to create drawings for user in engineering and other technical areas. Laser printers, inkjets, and many dot matrix printers are capable of merging text and graphics into a single document.
