A font or typeface is the style and design of the character a printer prints, for example, Times New Roman, Courier, Ariel etc. shows samples of some of the more common fonts. Word processing and graphics software now offer literally thousands offont styles and typefaces. However, every printer is not able to print every font. For example, a different wheel must be used in a daisy wheel printer for each font, and the wheel must be changed if the font changes. Most dot matrix printers offer 2 to 16 hard fonts (fonts that are built into the printer's firmware). However, soft fonts (fonts added from a disk or software) can be added and managed by the printer's device drivers. Laser and inkjet printers can produce almost every font the PC can generate, because they treat the document as a graphic image. The issue concerning these printers is often printer memory and not fonts.
