These printers are not meant to do images as their primary task. However, slide shows and even Word documents often contain image.s like graphs or sketches. Neither did we expect great photo prints in our tests, nor did we see them. The 21 step black to white column containing various shades of grey shows can be used to see how many shades a printer can reproduce. The two Canons were, err. .. powerful (pardon the pun), being able to show 18 shades from black to white.
The ability to show details in darker areas of the image is an important factor in photo printing, and here, the HPs excelled, with the less expensive Laser Jet P1007 in fact being the better ofthe two. The two Brother printers were disappointing - given their excellent text printing quality. The printouts showed little to no detail in the 'blacker' regions, but the image had excellent contrast. The Brothers will do well with line arts and graphs but anything with finer details (like a document with a scanned photograph) will suffer. You can solve this to some extent by manually adjusting brightness and contrast levels in the printer's driver.
