There isn't much to speak about the Canon LaserShot LBP-5050N because it seems that HP and Canon have a common OEM. Apart from the cosmetic differences and the presence of an RJ45 jack for network printing, this printer isn't much different from the HP LaserJet CP1215. The dimensions are exactly the same and the control panel is located on the top. There's a slight difference in which the control panel is laid out-it's a bit elongated. Since the two are identical twins, even the toner cartridges they use are the same. Just that HP and Canon have different model numbers. We tried interchanging the cartridges of the two printers and they both worked perfectly fine. The printer driver and application take up 100 MB of drive space., The printer application'that shows up in the system tray is very simple with an old-school feel. It has just three menus-Job, Options and Help. The Job menu has options to view the print queue and the Option menu has utilities to calibrate the printer and clean the cartridge drums.
A submenu called Device Settings lets you configure the settings for sleep time, startup, warning messages and network. Most of the important functions are present in the first tab of the printer driver's user interface-paper size, number of copies, orientation, number of pages per sheet, scaling and watermark. The Finishing tab has options to set the binding location (side and top) and size of the gutter, which is a very useful feature if you want to bind the pages into a book. Since the printer has a manual feed slot, the Paper Source tab lets you specify the paper source and type. The Quality tab comes in handy for adjusting the color density, brightness and contrast of color prints. You can use the manual color settings either to get accurate colors or wacky color effects. By default the color mode is set to auto which delivers good results without any adjustments.
