The all-black Samsung CLP-315 is about the size of a mono-laser printer and doesn't occupy much desktop real estate. Its.height and width is almost the same as the models by Canon and HP but its depth is 5 inches less. This is because the toner cartridges are stacked vertically as compared to the horizontal placement in a tray which needs additional depth. Also the cartridges are much slimmer as they don't have individual drums-there's only a single large common drum for all four colors behind the cartridges. Here, the advantage is that the cartridges are cheaper because it excludes the drum. However, you will have to replace the drum after its lifespan has exhausted. Installing the cartridges is pretty simple-you have to press down the lever in front which releases the door and exposes the cartridges. Each cartridge has two tiny handles at the ends to pull it out. The color of the handle denotes the color of the toner. Out of the four cartridges, the black cartridge is a little thicker as it's the most used (for printing text).
The feed tray located at the bottom sticks out 4 inches and has a capacity of 150 sheets. Levers for setting the paper size to A4 and Letter size are placed halfway down the tray. There's another tiny lever under the tray that also has to be set to A4 or Letter. So you'll have to remove the tray to set the paper size each time you want to print on a different paper size. The tray can also accommodate legal document paper for which you have to press down a clip and adjust the tray length. The control panel is placed on the top. It has indicators for each toner color, error and a big cancel button-very simple and to the point. We weren't satisfied with the print quality of text-it was excessively dark and blotchy (even in draft mode) due to which finely printed text (less than 3 points) was almost illegible. The quality of photos was good but it took a slight hit in contrast levels.
