Ricoh has recently launched quite a few printers focusing on the SOHO segment. In this review we look at the Aficio SP C232SF colour laser multifunction printer - which is capable of printing in four colours, and can also print in A4 size. One basic problem with almost fill printers, is, that the ink bleeds and seeps into the porous fibres of paper. This results in loss of fine detail in both text and graphics. However, Ricoh has made an attempt to solve this issue in its new Aficio SP C232SF. Instead of using water-based inks, the Aficio uses quick-drying gels, that solidify on the surface of
the paper, helping eliminate the problem.
The printer is extremely user-friendly. The control panel is well spaced out and easy to understand. The footprint is also small. One of the best features of the printer is the speed. The text that we printed was excellently reproduced, smoothly outlined. The ability to churn out 19 full-pages of text in just under a minute, is quite impressive. Photographic output on plain paper was very good, although the printer's default settings produced noticeable banding on our. After making the changes in the set-up, the printer produced a full A4 photographic image within 12 seconds, which is impressive. We do have some reservations about the printer's running costs, though.
