If the printer"s new, make sure you have removed the protective piece of vinyl tape from the cartridges. If that's not the case, there may be a problem with the ink cartridges-the ink might have smeared, streaked or gone splotchy. You might have to clean the print cartridges, so follow the instructions on the toolbox kit of your printer. The other reason for poor print quality could be the paper you are using. Make sure the paper is appropriate for the printer.
Also see that you have selected the correct paper type (check the settings optionsl. The print quality is also dependent on what you selected in the page setup option. In an HP printer, for example, you have a choice between Economy, Draft, and Best
