Amd's latest attempt to break through Intel's long standing supremacy has finally come good in the dual-core space. The AM3 based Phenom II X2 550 Bt: processor is clearly the best mainstream dual-core chip that you can buy today. Clocked at 3.1GH;;:, the 45nm dual core chip has a whopping 6MB of L3 cache (largest in its class) along with a modest TDP (power draw) of 80W. The AM3 platform allows the chip to be paired with DDR2 as well as DDR3 based boards, extending the scope of the chip to be used with various configurations. In our lab tests, the Phenom II X2 550 I consistently stayed ahead of its nearest competitor- the Intel Core2 Duo E7400 across real world, synthetic and gaming tests. The beefy cache comes in handy during heavy work-loads, giving it a clear edge over processors with similar clock speeds with lower cache. The Phenom II is also an ideal chip for an HTPC setup, it can handle full HD videos without getting maxed out, ensuring smooth multi-tasking during HD playback. The ready availability of AM2+ and AM3 boards along with reasonable pricing also ensures that the new Phenom II X2 is within reach of the mass market.Being a black edition CPU, Phenom II X2 550 is also an attractive buy for enthusiasts and power users who will find the unlocked CPU handy for overclocking. AMD has also introduced the 45nm based Athlon II X2 250 chip that sells for a 10 percent lower price tag. It manages to take the 3rd position in our list, just below the Intel Pentium E5200.
If AMD can manage to roll out more Phenom II X2 based dual-core chips, the mainstream segment is set for some interesting times ahead.
