With the graphics card market all of a sudden having more hotly contested than ever, both AMD and NVIDIA are continously trading blows at several different price points. For the time being, NVIDIA owns the single GPU performance crown but a large swath of the market all the way up to carrying into action leadership is very much up for grabs.
When AMD launched their Cayman-based HD 6900-series cards, it looked like they were caught a little flat footed by the earlier creation of the GTX 580 and GTX 570. This contributed to a situation where their latest flagship products lasted up competing with Fermi cards which were in effect discontinued. Nonetheless, through an excellent pricing structure AMD has been able to retain a highly competitive upper end product stack.
