You can use functions in Word only if your text is formatted as a table and contains numeric values as data. To convert text into table, carry out the following steps:
Provide spaces by pressing the [Tab] key instead of the [Spacebar] key from your keyboard. Make sure you press the tab key just once, even though the data does not appear aligned.
Select the data that you want to convert into table.
Click the 'Table' option appearing under the 'Tables' group of the tab.
From the drop-down menu, select the 'Convert Text to Table' option.
Select the 'Tabs' option from the 'Separate text at' section of the 'Convert Text to Table' dialog box.
Click 'OK' to create the table.
Once you have created the table, introduce a new row at the end to get the totals of all preceding values.
Right-click the last row of the table.
From the context menu, select the 'Insert' option, and then select the 'Insert WI Rows Below' option from the sub menu.
Type the word 'Total' in the first column of the row.
Similarly, add a row above the top row of the table for the table heading.
Right-click on the newly created row of the table.
From the context menu, select the 'Merge Cells' option.
NOTE: In this example, we have se't the table header font settings as Font size: '15' and Font Color='Maroon'. You can also make the text bold for greater emphasis.
Now add a column to calculate the difference. Right-click on the right most column of the table.
From the context menu, select the 'Insert' option, and then select the 'Insert Columns to the Right' option from the sub menu.
Enter an appropriate title. For example, 'Difference'.
Make necessary changes to your table. Your table is now ready to be computed upon.
