A Flash file is saved with .fla extension. There are three major components that are used in a Flash document. They are Basic Media, Timeline and ActionScript. The .fla format is used to save a file with all these components. In order to save a file with .fla extension, you have to first click on the File menu and then choose the Save option from the drop down menu. A dialog box will appear, and here you have to provide a file name and location for saving the file. Choose the file type as .fla and then click on Save. The file would be saved in the .fla format. The fla format is the format of the raw file. This file only opens with the Flash software and is version dependent. This means if you create a file in Flash CS3 and save it in the same version then you cannot reopen it in any lower version. This is a common feature across all versions of Flash.
