You receive the "some of the files that meet the search criteria may be missing from the list. IO error 82" error message when you browse through the folders that are in the Open dialog box in Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you go through folders that are in Open dialog box in Word 2000, you get error message that looks like following:

Some of the files that meet the search criteria maybe missing from the list. IO error 82

If you tick OK in this error message and then attempt to open a file, you get error message that look like following:

The file <name and path> is locked for editing by another user

CAUSE

This happens if Temp folder is either full or corrupted.

RESOLUTION

To solve this issue, recreate Temp folder. For this, follow the steps given below.

1. Rename the Temp folder. To do so, follow the steps given below:

a. Restart Windows in Safe Mode.
b. Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
c. In the left pane, explore My Computer, and click Local Disk (C.
d. In the right pane, double-click WINDOWS.
e. Right-click Temp, and then click Rename.
f. Type Old Temp, and hit ENTER.

2. Create a new Temp folder. To do so, follow the steps given below:
. Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
a. In the left pane, explore My Computer, and click Local Disk (C.
b. In the right pane, double-click WINDOWS.
c. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Folder.
d. Type Temp, and hit ENTER.
