The general use of MS Word for making documents is typically result of its user-friendly aspects. Different font styles and sizes, tables and lists, mechanically produced tables of contents and indices are menu option or button click away. A running head that shows titles, dates and page numbers can show at top of each page, so readers know where they are in document. You must define this aspect once with Word automatically placing and updating this feature.

Instructions

Step 1

Click "File" and select "Page Setup" to make heads that vary for first, odd and even pages. The Page Setup dialog box emerges.

Select "Layout" tab and then click "Different First Page" and "singular Odd and Even," based on which headers you desire. Click "OK" to save modification and close dialog box.

Step 2

Select "View" and choose "Headers and Footer" to display Header page. If you are defining many headers, page may say "First Page Header," "Odd Page Header" or "Even Page Header." Or else, it only says "Header." In any case, Header toolbar shows. If you desire running head to be blank, like start of document, leave Header page blank.

Step 3

Move cursor into Header box and enter text for running head. You can put in mechanically updated text, like contemporary date and time. To format text, select it and utilize options in standard formatting toolbar and menu.

Step 4

Select "Close" to close description page and go back to document. View superfluities by selecting "View" menu and clicking "Print Layout." Top of each page displays your running heads.
