The most recent edition of DirectX, DirectX 9.0b, is intended to provide all sound cards with 3D support boost in performance compared to DirectX 8.x and previous versions. Previous versions of DirectX supported 3D with DirectSound3D, but performance of DirectSound3D was restricted. Game programmers wanted to check audio adapter to notice whether it supported DirectSound3D acceleration and then would either enable or disable 3D sounds depends on host hardware. Beginning with DirectX 5.0, DirectSound3D works with third-party 3D acceleration facets. Compared to DirectX 8.x, DirectX 9.0b develops 3D audio quality and performance.
