Creative Labs: The Microsoft of Sound - The Sound Engine for DoomIII
A new, rather popular game you might have heard of is known as "DoomIII". Id Software determined that for this game they would make their own sound engine, with idea for it to be able to utilize all of effects they place in on any audio hardware, from included audio to most costly sound card. Granted it would need CPU cycles for that, but in many conditions those are available anyhow without harmfully affecting game play. Id planned from begins to not use any original software algorithms, because that locks in users to particular products as opposite to having option.
A company like Creative Labs would be interested in conducting their own game engine to what would possibly become a famous title. It would not tell much for their engine, if id could come out with quality audio that was identical to or better than their own product. Particularly when you think the many offshoots that will come later off the DoomIII engine. Creative Labs was aware of this through product's growth, as id has declared its desire to stay away from proprietary products, meaning no EAX support.
Currently, CL does occur to hold a certain patent relating to stencil buffers utilized in shadowing. This patent occurred to be filed with "prior art" in evidence, yet someway still got through. That prior art turned into what is known as "Carmack's Reverse", and this method is used in DoomIII to permit for shadow effects where the camera is within similar shadow.
Creative Labs sat on this patent until the release of game. Then they allow id identify they had a patent for a method utilized in game, and vulnerable lawful action. The resolution finished up being Creative Labs gets EAX pushed into DoomIII, and all games license that engine.
Thus why was not this fought by id Software? Because with a wish to obtain game out and in the hands of customers. This was the solution. Official action would have banned the release, whether it was initiated by either party. And changing to other method of producing shadows would also have delayed the release.
