Default No sound after the startup or cant listen to sound

I own a Dell Studio 15 laptop with Windows Vista, and an Intel Core 2 Duo T5820 CPU. The problem is that I can't hear any sounds from the system while playing games or music but when I restart the system I can hear sounds for some time then later I can't hear them anymore again. If I restart again the same thing happens. I have the latest updated drivers from Dell for my sound card. I have scanned for viruses. I have also checked the Device Manager and it shows that the sound device is working normally. What should I do? Please reply. Thanks

You seem to have a laptop with a hardware problem. It seems to be either a loose connection of the internal components related to the sound card, or the sound chip is faulty itself. To find out for sure, try booting using a Ubuntu Live CD and check if sound can be heard, or else try a fresh new installation/restore of the operating system after taking a backup of your data. This will reveal any problem with the software or hardware.
