I would like to assist that you should check your USB interface by plug-in another slots of the USB and check whether the drive is being detected or not there might be a reason due driver failure of the USB hub controllers and you can go through a check in the device manager of the laptop and check all the devices and if you find some yellow colored question mark or exclamation mark on any device other than USB controller or even on the USB controller than you should the driver of the system.
And you can go through a check just unscrew the casing of the USB drive and if it is SATA you can connect to any of the desktop by using the SATA cable and if it is detected the problem is with the casing of the drive and you have to buy a new one. If not detected than the problem that the Hard-Drive is being gone bad.
Are you using a 320gb ide/pata 2.5" hard drive or a sata/serial-ata one?
