If you need a 320 GB hard¬disk soon, at the least possi¬ble price, the Hitachi drive isn't a bad choice at all. At an average of 59.8 MBps in Everest's random write test, and 60.7 MBps in the random read test, this DeskStar might have been good for even an HTPC, given its reI a tively lower power consumption and pricing. However, the drive is let down by high average read access times.

It also turned out to be the warmest drive in the lineup, after 2 hours of being run at high stress lev¬els. Real world tests did receive a big jolt though ¬this drive took 1,317 seconds to complete the simultaneous read-write test. The reason could well be that this was the only drive among the three to have only 8 MB of cache (the other two have 16 MB).
