Whisper Drive Western Digital calls its patented technology to reduce noise. It uses the manufacturer intelligent search algorithms that of the 2.5-inch hard drive to allow the necessary read and write operations with as few rotations of the data slices to perform straight, without changing the read-write heads unnecessarily out often. The Whisper Drive does not work so well, turned out in our noise test: When you access the Scorpio WD3200BEVT was 23.5 dB (A) and 0.4 Sone of the loudest 2.5-inch drives in the test, with the typical maximum speed of 5400 revolutions per minute work.
The Western Digital Scorpio WD3200BEVT based on two data disks, each with two read-write heads, for buffering data, a large 8 MB cache. The 2.5-inch drive a familiar modern SATA/300-Interface, the transfer speeds of theoretically up to 300 MB / s.. The gross capacity of 320 GB shrinks to NTFS formatting together to 298 GB. Background for the capacity loss on the one hand is the usual case of disk manufacturers computational trick, that is 1000 x 1000 bytes = 1 MB. PCs, however, expect and need for binary 1 MB 1024 x 1024 bytes. In addition, the operating systems for addressing and error correction take up space and make reservations, which can not be use for storing files.
The Western Digital Scorpio WD3200BEVT convinced by our data rate measurements by their speed. The maximum transfer rate of the Scorpio model was very good read 67.2 MB / s and was writing 65.4 MB / s only a little slower. Compared to the fastest 2.5-inch hard drive that was Samsung Spinpoint M6 HM500LI, the Western Digital drive to read only about 6 MB / s slower when writing the distance but increased significantly to over 11 MB / s .On average, the Western Digital drive came to around 50 MB / s - a good result. And the minimum data rates achieved with over 31 MB / s also great value.
