Terabyte capacities can now be found in external hard drives. Current example: Seagate's 3.5-inch drive Free Agent Xtreme in black housing. The panel begins work as soon as it is plugged into a computer. An off switch is not present. So it is not surprising that the lowest value was quite high in the current meter at 4.1 watts. Due to the passive cooling, the heat generated inside the housing to escape, only slots. As the maximum temperature value we have so also measured very high 48 degrees Celsius. At the same time the external drive in the test was always audible: Under load we measured 30.5 dB (A) or 1.2 sone. In idle mode, the drive came to 27.3 dB (A) or 0.6 sone.
The portable drive comes with USB 2.0 Hi-Speed, E-SATA and two FireWire 400 ports to interface with a sumptuous selection. Ready to Install will be playing the toolset Seagate Manager. With it you can data, synchronize and secure encryption. For vertical use is plugged in to a foot. The manufacturer specifies a USB and a Firewire cable to both. The e-SATA connection is not included. You must be purchased separately.
The speed runs completed the drive fast. In particular, the results on E-SATA port convinced: This is where the panel maximum transfer rate of 110.44 MB / s reading and 110.56 MB / s in writing. Connected via Firewire, the values were not greater than 42.70 MB / s read and 35.32 MB / s in writing. And over the USB connection on the drive was 33.20 MB / s read and 31.08 MB / s write. The positive performance completed the fast, at 9.8 ms average seek time. An external drive that worked smoothly and offers plenty of space. In dealing with energy and volume Seagate could still make improvements. But the Seagate Free Agent Xtreme comes with 18 cents per GB for a reasonable price.
