Blu-ray also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is name of a next-generation optical disc format collectively developed by Blu-ray Disc Association a group of the world's leading user electronics, computer and media makers like Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson.
The format was developed to allow recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), and storing huge quantities of data. The format gives over 5 times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can carry up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. This extra capacity merged with the use of advanced video and audio codec’s will offer users an first-time HD experience.
