Hidden settings in windows 2000

If you are not happy, editing the record, I recommend that you get hold of a copy of the excellent X-Setup System XTeq, superbly, which works with Windows 2000. This program will allow you to fuçar a large number of settings record.

1.GROUP POLITICAL EDITOR: Several options can be changed by the administrator visiting setup. When Start \ Run prompt type "gpedit.msc". This will open a management console that provides access to various settings administrator. There are many options to discuss here, so I have highlighted a couple of the more useful ones below:

Skrbniške: In Folder System is an option to disable autoplay CD. In Windows Components is an option to disable the Internet Explorer screen.

2. OUTLOOK EXPRESS: To disable the screen Outlook Express, open Regedit.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Identities \ GUID (Identification Number) \ Software \ Microsoft \ Outlook Express \ 5.0

Button right in the panel on the right, and choose New Dword Value. Name this value "NoSplash", and then set the value to 1.

3. INDEXING: If you do a lot of searching for files you might consider allowing crawling on your drives. In NTFS this can be done only through the right clicking on the drive and amending the properties, but the procedure is slightly more involved if you are using FAT. Go to StartMenu / Search / For files and folders. Under search options click on the red link service to activate the program.

4. HIDDEN DEVICES: In Device Manager, there is an option to show hidden settings: on the menu go to View / Show Hidden Devices. I had a couple of points here which were not installed correctly.

5. PMTU DISCOVERY: You can configure Windows 2000 to calculate the MTU between your machine and a remote host, for example, Your ISP. This avoids the fragmentation of information sent over the connection, and can improve the Internet connection speeds.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ Tcpip \ Parameters

Button right in the panel on the right, and choose New Dword Value. Name this value "EnablePMTUDiscovery", and then set the value to 1.

6. Allow DMA: DMA (Direct Memory Access) allows your IDE or CDRom access memory directly, bypassing the CPU. This can release CPU resources, especially when you are running several programs at once (multitasking), or using very CPU intensive programmes. You can also see this referred to as Ultra DMA, which is essentially the same thing, but allowing greater speeds explosion. First your drives should be able DMA, most of the new drives will have this capability, in addition, all drives on a particular channel DMA should be able too. In Windows 2000 DMA is enabled by channel, not by device: therefore, if you have two devices on an IDE port, both should be able DMA - this is important, as some CDRom drives are not able DMA. To set DMA mode, click Administrative Tools and then follow these steps to set up the DMA / PIO definitions of a driver:

Click on Administrative Tools, then click Computer Management. Click System Tools, then click on Device Manager. Expand IDE ATA / ATAPI controllers. Click on the specific controller for which you want to configure DMA / PIO settings. Click the Advanced Settings. No Transfer Mode box, or click on a PIO Only DMA if available.

7. INFORMATION SYSTEM: You can collect software and hardware configuration using the Information System on information Start / Programs / Accessories / System Tools. This information can be useful in solving a problem, or it can be used to document its initial configuration and any subsequent addenda hardware or software upgrades.

8. CLEAR PAGING FILE: Windows 2000 does not automatically clear the contents of the file paging when you restart. As some programs unencrypted can store information in virtual memory, it is essentially a security problem - sensitive information may be available to others to access your machine. To allow this open regisry the following key:

HKey_Local_Machine / System / CurrentControlSet / Control / Session Manager / Memory Management

Select ClearPageFileAtShutdown value and set it to 1 to enable. This can slow down the closing-down process significantly however.

ACCESS 9.DISABLE LAST TIME: To avoid ntfs since the last update access time of each directory, open the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ FileSystem

Add a new value DWord the name NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate: set the value of 1 to disable this feature.

10. COMPATIBILITY MODE: Service Pack 2 (SP2) includeS optimum compatibility mode that allows programs as if they were running on a Windows NT 4.0 SP5 or Windows 95 machine. To enable this interface, perform the following steps:

Start a box Run (Start, Run).
Enter the following command: "regsvr32% systemroot% \ apppatch \ slayerui.dll"

Click OK.
Click OK to the confirmation.

Now, if the right mouse button and select Properties a shortcut, you will see a compatibility guide that allows you to select the program target should run under an NT 4.0 SP5 or Win95 compatibility layer.
