One of the most important ways to improve and maintain the regular defragmentation performance is the hard disk. While it is true that you are using the file system, is especially true in the case of NTFS, in which the fragmentation of the TMF can have a serious impact on performance. Windows 2000 was built in defragmenter, Diskeeper made by Executive Software. That is fine, but has limited functionality. Two important aspects that need a defragmenter are programming, as well as the ability to perform transactions booting, known as boot-time defragmentation: system files and directories can be defragmented more effective before the operating system is loaded. The only disadvantage with long boot-time operations is that they may become unstable.

1. P & O Defrag: A simple and effective program, works with all file systems. Limited but effective boot-time defragmentation: does the paging system files and some files. It can be programmed. Latest version is Version 20001 Pro, which appears to offer some significant improvements.

2. Perfect Disk 2000: A large number of people from the favorite. Very powerful, defragments paging files and directories, offline or boot-time option. It works on all file systems. For some reason not put all the files in front of the car, but some moves to the back of the unit. Version 4 has been released.

3. Diskeeper: Very comprehensive and effective boot-time options, and far too fast. But lacking some of the advanced options of Perfect Disk 2000. The full version adds scheduling, boot-time options, and defragmentation of multiple simultaneous volumes for the Windows version 2000. The main problem with Diskeeper is that it requires more than a move to completely defragment. The new version, 6.0 was released in November 2000.

When things go wrong, especially using NTFS where you do not have DOS options, you need to have some effective tools at its disposal. Fortunately Microsoft provides an excellent utility with Windows 2000, the Recovery Console, when you can not start your system. P & O Software is an excellent program that works in a similar way. BlueCon 2000 additionally provides access to all volumes on a system, and works with Windows NT4 and 2000, there is also a Pro version available .. NTFSDOS Pro also lets you access MSDOS of NTFS partitions. Another utility is recommended repair LRRD Commander 2000, which allows users to access and modify files on NTFS and FAT partitions before booting the Operating System.

There are two complete sets of system tools currently available. The first is Fix-It Utilities V.3.0 by OnTrack. This package includes a defragmenter to register tools, disk fixer, and a very basic anti-virus program. Most interesting of all, however, it has a feature called Lifeline System, which can provide access to a system NTFS fell: NTFS is a great file system, but can not be accessed through DOS, in the event of an accident.

Symantec has just announced the launch of SystemWorks 2001, including Norton AntiVirus 2001, Norton Utilities 2001 and Norton Cleansweep 2001. Not all elements of the package Norton Utilities are available to users of Windows 2000, but Disk Doctor, Doctor System, Unerase Wizard, Speed Disk, WinDoctor, Norton Protection and Information System (without the benchmarking tools) are available, making this a great Improvement over NT previous offers.



Also from P & O Software is CleverCache Pro: this program improves on Windows 2000 file caching, and can produce excellent results, especially when you are running 128MB of memory or less.

Super Speed 2000 is another disk cache program, which works well, and can greatly improve the performance IO. I think that is less friendly than CleverCache, but certainly can produce good results.

If you want to try some of the many adjustments record available, the latest version of X Configuration Xteq Systems is what you need, this latest version is very stable with Windows 2000, and can really improve the system. The latest version of Tweakui (1.33)-Microsoft has some useful adjustments, some of which are not available in X Setup.

FIREWALLS:

Several excellent firewall programs are available for Windows 2000. The new version of Norton Internet Security 2001 V.3.0 uses the excellent firewall technology purchased from AtGuard. It also includes Norton Anti Virus and a blocker of ads for Web sites. The version 3 of Norton's firewall is excellent and easy to use, as well as setting some vulnerabilities in previous versions. Also very effective, and free, is ZoneAlarm from Zone Labs, it is as good as Norton, making all ports invisible when you are online, and is easy to use. The latest version of Black Ice Defender is now compatible with Windows 2000, this is a firewall program highly regarded NetworkICE.
