Complexity with my Win2000...

I have recently installed a fresh installation of Win2000Pro and then onto an old Gateway comp I also had it lying around. All seems to be working fine, except the mouse and the display also. The mouse also moved very choppy while working on it. The display was able to display only 640x480 16 colors. If you try to modify it, it will then ask you that would you like to keep the settings, and then if you click OK, it will directly go back to the 640x480 16 colors. I was of the opinion that a driver maybe causing the issue?

Thanks, any suggestions are really appreciated!

You most likely will be required to install the chipset drivers & the video drivers too from the Gateway website if it's still up there.

Normally if you are unable to locate the drivers for a PC, as in this case, it is generally due to one or more of the below given reasons:

1. Vendor tested and confirmed that piece of hardware will not work with the OS
2. Vendor has not tested that OS with that hardware
3. OS already has built-in drivers for that hardware and a vendor created one is not necessary.

As you are unable to locate the file drivers and encountering with the above given issues mentioned, then the only problem is that your hardware is bad. You also stated it that it was lying around. And hence it might have gone bad for over time? Have you given a try for looking on the video card to see what kind of chipset is the video is having? You may also be able to go to that chipset website and from there download a new driver package which will cover a large range of devices.

Thanks once again for your quick reply. I have never had figured out Win2000, so I just went back to Win98SE. I've got the whole thing running fine without any problem, except the sound drivers. Do you know where can I’m able to find the Sound drivers for a Gateway G6-300 with S/N 0010704530?

Win 2K would be more better then it. If you know what sort of chipset are there in the computer (you should be able to locate them very easily), then you will be able to download the drivers from the chipset manufacturer's website. You also don't have to rely on the Gateway. If you have an Intel chipset, then you easily locate drivers on the Intel's website. As for the video, try to make a note of all the drivers which Win 98 has, then you can easily find drivers for 2K. As for sound, not including meaningful what codec chip the laptop has and also makes it complex to tell you what sort of drivers you will require and where to get them. You must at least be able to get some of the detailed specs on that laptop from the Gateway... even if you are not capable of finding all the drivers which you desire to download.
