 |
|
 |
|
MMC is included in the Windows 2000 operating system and also runs on the Windows 98 and XP family of operating systems. With MMC you can create administrative tools with the help of snap-ins, provided by the Microsoft and third party software vendors. Let us now undertake the following steps to open the MMC window.
1. Move the mouse-pointer over the Start button and click the left mouse-button. A push-up menu appears. Inside the push-up menu, move the mouse-pointer over the Run option and click the left mouse-button.
2. The Run dialog box appears. Type mmc and press the Enter key.
3. A Console1 window with a child window Console Root appears
Snap-in is crucial part ofMMC window and it acts as a primary tool in computer management related tasks. However to work with snap-ins, it is recommended that you should log on the computer as administrator because there are certain tasks that can be accomplished with adminis.trative rights. One such situation could be authoring a MMC to make some changes in the included snap-ins. Let us now undertake the following steps to add snap-ins in MMC window.
1. Move the mouse-pointer over the Console menu and click the left mouse-button. A pull-down menu appears.
2. Inside the pull-down menu, move the mouse-pointer over the Add/Remove Snap-in option and click the left mouse-button
3. The Add/Remove Snap-in dialog box appears
4. Inside the Add/Remove Snap-in dialog box, move the mouse-pointer over the Add button and click the left mouse-button.
5. Now move the mouse-pointer over the Add button and click the left mouse-button
6. Device Manager dialog box appears asking whether the administrator would like to use this snap-in to manage a 10Gai computer or some another computer present on LAN. In our case, we will use the snap-in to man'age local computer. So, make sure a dot appears beside the Lqcal computer option. In case it is not there then move the mouse-pointer over the round button beside the Local computer option and click the left mouse-button. Next. move the mouse-pointer over the Finish button and click the left mouse-button
7. To Add Another dialog box, Add Standalone Snap-in appears. In the list of snap-ins, listed under Available Standalone Snap-ins, move the mouse-pointer over a snap-in name, say Device Manager, and click the left mouse-button to highlight it
8. Next move the mouse-pointer over the Add button and click the left mouse-button
9. After adding necessary snap-ins, move the mouse¬pointer over the Close button present in the Add Standalone Snap-in dialog box and click the left mouse-button
