    Default Problem with Windows background

    Hi

I am currently running windows 2000 Professional on my laptop. And I was easily able to have different types of background on the windows, until this morning. But all of sudden my screen picture altered in to a plain blue color. I have right clicked on the top of the desktop and properties and below the background where every thing is been grayed out, there is also no way where I can alter something. The other entire tab’s like - Screen saver, appearance, Web, effects and settings all are ok. How can I alter the background in it?

Is this kind of problem occurs to only one user by logging on to this machine then it is more likely then a user related problem, i.e. Profile or rights that may have been altered. Though the other options which are been included in it are as:

    1) If you are on a Domain (somewhat than on a Workgroup)
    a) If your on a Domain, which is having a Group Policy been used for taking out the Desktop access or applying a particular Policy for stopping the users from modifying the Windows Desktop.
    b) If a Group Policy which has been applied you'll then require taking out any of the machine or your account from the "Apply Policy" option then logging off and logging back on it again. Type "gpupdate" from the command line which will be applicable for the updated policy.

    2) Have you lately altered the rights from the account which you normally use to log onto this local machine?
    a) Put the settings back to the way they were as before.
    b) Also try running a Remote Desktop connection to this machine by making use of "mctsc" from an additional Windows machine, if the problem still exists then try.

    3) Delete your profile from the local machine; you'll be able to find the under shown on your computer desktop C:\Documents and Settings\%username%.
    a) NOTE: This option will also be the reason for you to loose the settings and also the files, it will therefore be more suggested you to backup everything or else just rename the directory as the part of this process.

    Hope this helps you out.
