At start up or yet later reboot, when I go to utilize windows explorer, it stops and restarts all too frequently. simply starting to open a folder it frequently wants two and three attempts as the explorer hangs and restarts.

If you need you can change the explorer.exe perform this in Safe Mode. Delete the explorer file then change it with mine.AND advise acquiring rid of Zone Alarm/AVG for MSE.
