For quick execution of files, Windows has an index structure known as the Search Index.

This index constantly keeps a track of files and their whereabouts so that it can be executed quickly when required by the user.

This inbuilt tool in Windows is quite handy but may also reduce the performance especially if you have minimum hardware requirements on your PC to run Vista.
