The defragmentor in Windows Vista scans your system for all scattered files on the hard drive and rearranges them thus keeping your system healthy.

This feature isn't really necessary and can be disabled.

But one should run the Disk Defragmentor at least once a week to maintain a healthy system.

To disable automatic disk defragmentation, Click "Start I My Computer", Right-click an appropriate drive and select the "Properties" option.

Select the "Tools" tab. Click the "Defragment now" button, Clear the "Run on a schedule" checkbox" and click "OK".
