    Freshly installed Vista refuses to enter standby. The standby mode doesn't work on
    a new Vista PC in spite of the perfect BIOS settings and updated drivers¬rather Vista only shows the login screen. Where do these errors come from and what can you do about them?

    The slick new version of Windows doesn't go to standby as long as the 'Allow the device to wake the computer from standby' wake up option is activated in the device manager for one (or more) USB or PS/2 devices. The easiest solution is to search for USB or PS/2 devices in the device manager and deactivate the above-mentioned option. However, then a mouse click or a keyboard key press also won't wake Vista up from the standby mode anymore and you will have to press the power button to do so.

    If you don't want to make this tradeoff, with some luck there could be another solution- If the '+5V STBY' jumper option (see your motherboard manual) is found on the motherboard, you have to activate it for the USB or PS/2 port to which the respective mouse or keyboard is attached.
