Vista's Windows Update can constantly inform you that there are optional updates available. Although some updates are'important, others, such as language packs, might never be useful to you. To stop Vista warning you of their availability, launch Windows Update from the Start menu and click the link labelled View available updates. Right-click on any that you are not interested in installing and select Hide update from the menu that appears.
