Thread: Windows Vista Starter Edition

After reading some reviews and evaluations on Windows Vista Starter, despite not being a version available in the Spanish market, I decided to install it for more than anything else, see what it was and exactly where it is possible to come up with this version.

Above all, in order to evaluate it properly, we must focus on Windows Vista Starter Edition is exactly what that is, a basic version of Windows Vista, designed to be installed on computers and little economic power, which gives a very low cost assembly of computers by businesses in the so-called emerging markets.
It is indeed a version of Microsoft (according to Microsoft itself, it is obviously something that I have not seen) has not put up for sale and only available preinstalled on new computers. This does not include Microsoft for this version in the distribution of DVD sales of Windows Vista (at least in the OEM versions), which has allowed me to install it to see for myself what it is and what its limitations real.

On this, it seems that some people has created quite bad (the classification of your country as an emerging market), you have to say that this is not the Microsoft that makes it, and never force Microsoft to install this version on any market (offering the possibility of ... not bind a. ..). What policies by selling their companies then make assembly is another matter.

Furthermore, these markets are also available on other versions of Windows Vista, so those who want a higher version just have to buy it (as, on the other hand, we pass all the others).

Windows Vista Starter Edition is essentially a Windows Vista Home Basic, but with certain limitations. First let's see what are the minimum requirements and recommended:

- Video adapter Super VGA resolution of 800x600

- Support for DirectX 9 graphics and 32 MB of graphics memory

- CD-ROM, DVD or a combination

- Internet access (with the possible tariffs on the connection)

Regarding its limitations, that Microsoft certainly does not say so clearly see what is discussed. We will see also the results that I got to try that version.

- Recognizes only up to 1 GB of RAM. It is possible to install, but Windows Vista does not recognize the additional memory.

At least in my team and me this version has any problems with the installed memory (2048MB - 256 allocated to the graphics = 1792).

- It's the only version of Vista that has no 64-bit version.

True, but for the type of market to target, especially for the type of computer which is supposed to be offered, is entirely logical, that without getting into the controversy of whether to install a version of interest 64bits at present or have a better performance as a whole (including software) version of 64bits.



- Only recognized hard disks up to 160 GB. You can install a bigger hard drive, but Vista is only going to get partition (i.e., recognized) as a disk of 160 GB.

To begin with, the requirements already indicated that a maximum 250GB, but as with the memory, I had no problems with this item. I mounted a disk 320GB (297GB formatted real once) and I recognized the whole (a partition of 117GB and 180GB).

- You can only open up to three programs simultaneously.

True, only to open up to 3 programs at the same time, although I have not seen a limited number of windows have the same program, at least within reason (it is not logical to open 20 windows of the same program, I tried up to 6 windows program, a total of 18 windows, which really is too high).

- Do not get the ReadyBoost feature, which allows any flash memory, such as a pendrive or memory cards can be used as disk cache to increase performance of your computer.

UAC also has (User Account Control), which works just like the other versions.

- Does not work with Dual Core processors, limiting the use of a single nucleus.

Well, at least in performance if you see movement in both nuclei.

We can see that appears in System Information, recognized perfectly.

- No place has the appeal of Marks (keywords) into files to facilitate searching for documents.

Admittedly, the options are limited indexing.

- Does not support controls on Xbox 360.

I can not check (for the type of version I guess it's true, and quite logical).

- It comes with the power of synchronization, which facilitates the synchronization of files located on PDAs and similar devices.

Again, at least in the installation I've done it is that central synchronization.
