In Windows XP you can use a Microsoft program called TweakUI to make changes to the icons that appear in Windows, including removing the arrows from shortcuts. However, Microsoft hasn't released a version ofTweakUI that will do the same thing for Windows Vista. Instead you can use a program called FrameworkX to do the same thing. Take a look at the instructions tinyurl sites and download the program using the link on that page. When you see the box asking what kind of shortcut icon you would like, select the appropriate option and click Apply, then follow any other prompts that appear.
